American R&B sensation, Usher, is getting all the attention this year and is receiving his flowers. After giving a spectacular performance at this year’s Superbowl, the renowned musician was the man of the hour at the 2024 BET Awards as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
Before Usher accepted the award, BET set the stage with an incredible tribute medley in which numerous performers paid homage to the 45-year-old singer by performing hits from his illustrious repertoire.
Childish Gambino did the R&B legend’s 2002 smash “U Don’t Have to Call” and did justice to it with a smooth cover before Keke Palmer joined him on stage. Palmer took it back to the 90’s with the 1997’s “You Make Me Wanna…,” which landed on Usher’s sophomore My Way album.
Summer Walker contributed a seductive verse to Usher’s sensual “Good Good” collaboration, which also features 21 Savage, during her cameo on the 2023 Coming Home album. Summer held down the fort with her group of dancers wearing black corsets and combat boots, sans Savage, while Usher watched from the front row.
At the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Coco Jones startled the audience by racing through Usher’s “There Goes My Baby.” Before returning to the stage, the up-and-coming singer had Usher’s wife stand up after giving her a sensual dance.
Then, Victoria Monét and Teyana Taylor performed “Bad Girl,” a tag-team performance that featured the camera flipping around to keep up with the pair’s gymnastic feats.
The incredible “Yeah!” by Latto, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks in a row in 2004, concluded the tribute show. In order to better reflect what she is bringing to the table, Big Latto even changed a few of the lyrics.
