Looks like 2024 has been the year for women as they have dominated the music awards scene globally, from the Grammys, and now to the BRITS. 70% of the winning performances for the BRIT Awards in 2024 went to a female or non-binary, which is a significant shift from previous years when the Brits were criticized for favoring largely male performers.
The incredibly talented British pop singer Raye has broken the record of four Brit awards in a single year, having won six, this time from Adele, Blur, and Harry Styles. She capped a triumphant night for women across a range of genres.
After winning honors for album, artist, song, and songwriter of the year, as well as best new artist and R&B act, Raye, a 26-year-old London native, christened, Rachel Keen, made a stunning comeback. The Pop artist category was the sole category in which she was nominated but lost to Dua Lipa in a popular vote.
After winning the largest prize of the evening—album of the year—Raye took her grandmother to the stage, bringing many in the audience, including herself, to tears. She cried, “I’m ugly crying on national television.” “I love music, and I’m so proud of this album. I’ve always wanted to be an artist.”
