Rich Homie Quan, the influential rapper who helped shape the sound of Atlanta hip-hop, has tragically passed away at 34, according to reports.
The report, confirmed by family representatives and Fulton County, states that the artist died at his home in Atlanta. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, the news has sent shockwaves through the music industry.
Born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, Quan first made waves in the hip-hop world in 2013 with his breakthrough single “Type of Way,” which peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. By then, he had already built momentum with the release of his mixtapes “I Go in on Every Song” and “Still Goin In” in 2012, the latter of which received a “Reloaded” edition in 2013 that helped elevate his status. The success of “Type of Way” was further boosted by a remix featuring Jeezy and Meek Mill.
His star continued to rise, and by 2015, Quan achieved his highest charting single with “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” which peaked at No. 26. The song, featured on his “If You Ever Think I Will Stop Goin’ In Ask RR” mixtape, affirmed his position as a major player in the rap scene.
In 2018, Rich Homie Quan released his debut studio album, “Rich as in Spirit,” under Motown Records. The project, mostly featureless except for a collaboration with Rick Ross on “Think About It.” Throughout his career, Quan was also a central figure in the Cash Money supergroup Rich Gang, where he collaborated with Young Thug on several hits, including the fan-favourite “Lifestyle.”
Quan’s influence extended beyond his own releases. He collaborated with Travis Scott on the song “Mamacita” and with Gucci Mane on “Chasen Paper,” leaving an indelible mark on the rap genre.
Just this week, Quan’s name was mentioned in court during the ongoing YSL RICO trial in Georgia, where Young Thug faces serious charges. Despite the legal entanglements surrounding some of his peers, Quan remained a beloved figure in the rap community.
Following the news of his death, tributes have poured in from across the music industry. Boosie Badazz, in a heartfelt message, shared that he had “just talked” to Quan and expressed his deep sorrow, stating he would “never forget” Quan’s infectious smile and his music.
