The 2024 BET Awards, a celebration of Black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports, and philanthropy, unfolded spectacularly on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the event showcased a dazzling array of talent and memorable moments.

Victoria Monét, Killer Mike, Usher, and South Africa’s star Tyla emerged as the night’s big winners. Tyla, the 22-year-old sensation, kicked off the awards by claiming Best International Act and later secured Best New Artist, marking a significant milestone for African representation in the global music scene. Nigeria’s Tem’s also won the “DR. BOBBY JONES Best Gospel/Inspirational Award” with her single “Me & U”

R&B legend Usher received a Lifetime Achievement Award and was named Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, while SZA, though absent, took home the award for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. Killer Mike’s “Michael” was crowned Album of the Year, and Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama” won both the BET Her Award and Video of the Year.

The ceremony was punctuated by electrifying performances. Megan Thee Stallion set the tone with a high-energy opening act, emerging from a giant egg in a nod to her new album “Megan”. Will Smith delivered a rousing rendition of his new song “You Can Make It”, while a star-studded lineup including GloRilla, Ice Spice, Latto, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and others kept the audience enthralled throughout the night.

One of the evening’s highlights was a passionate speech by Killer Mike, adding gravitas to the celebrations. The absence of some winners, including Regina King (Best Actress) and SZA, did little to dampen the spirits of the event.

While not all categories were announced during the live telecast, the awards distributed spanned a wide range of talents in the entertainment industry, reinforcing BET’s commitment to recognizing diverse voices and achievements in Black culture.

The 2024 BET Awards will be remembered for its exceptional performances, its blend of established stars and up-and-coming talent, and its ongoing commitment to elevating Black voices in the entertainment industry as the curtain comes down on another successful year of awards shows.
