Ghanaian AfroSoul and RnB singer Darkua has released her latest single, “Miiya“, a powerful anthem addressing domestic violence and toxic relationships. The soulful track, produced by one of Ghana’s brightest talents Insvne Auggie, carries a profound message of empowerment and liberation.
“Miiya“, which means “I’m Going/Leaving” in the Ga language, showcases Darkua’s impressive vocal range and emotional depth. The artist explains the song’s significance: “‘MiiYa’ is a song for every person going through domestic violence with their intimate partners. In most cases, they fear the stigma that comes with it, so they stay silent,” she says.
Darkua’s lyrics delve into the complexities of leaving abusive relationships. “Sometimes, offenders guilt the survivors into staying. Other times, they’re threatened,” she adds. The song blends vulnerability with strength, reflecting the tumultuous emotions involved in ending a difficult relationship.
Addressing those trapped in toxic situations, Darkua offers words of encouragement: “Leaving a relationship/marriage with a violent partner can be tough, because you believe, and have hopes that they’re going to change one day. Truth is, they’re never going to change. It’s only going to get worse.”
The artist emphasizes the importance of seeking help: “Leaving is never easy, but don’t be scared to seek or accept help. No matter how bad the situation, it’s never too late to leave.” She concludes with a heartfelt message to her listeners: “I believe you can come out of it and whoever you are, wherever you are, I love you.”
“Miiya” brings a fresh and meaningful sound to the AfroSoul genre, combining musical artistry with a crucial social message. The single is now available on all major streaming platforms.
