Ghana’s alte scene came alive this weekend as the fourth edition of Ess Live, hosted by soulful singer Ess the Legend, took over the Barndoor Beer Garden. The event, billed as a curated night beach playlist experience, brought together the cream of Ghana’s alternative music community for a night of mesmerizing performances and networking.
Despite looming weather concerns, fans flocked to the venue, eager to immerse themselves in the eclectic atmosphere. The night started with a spine-tingling performance by Abla Unique, who set the tone with her hit “Silly Girls” and quickly energized the crowd.
The Ghanaian alte collective 99 Phaces, featuring CozyPols, Kiki Celine, Moffy, Freddie Gambini and Anabel Rose, took turns proving why they’re at the forefront of Ghana’s alternative movement. Kiki Celine captivated the audience with a solo rendition of “Fragile.” At the same time, Freddie Gambini and Anabel Rose delighted fans with their popular duet “Pain & Pleasure” from the “Heartstrings & Loops” album by LeonardoDDJ and Iyke Parker.
The queen of the night, Ess the Legend, took centre stage with a serenading performance that left the crowd in awe. She was later joined by the talented Darkua, adding another layer to the already rich musical bash.
Rising star Arathejay, fresh off the release of his debut project “Finding Nimo Series: The Capsule,” wowed patrons with a live set that undoubtedly won him new admirers. The incredible vocalist Titi Owusu also delivered one of her best performances to date, joining Ess the Legend for some unforgettable collaborations.
Capping off the night on a high note was Romeo Swag, a crowd favourite from the Ghanaian rap scene. His infectious energy and dynamic performance provided the perfect finale to an already stellar lineup.
The fourth iteration of Ess Live demonstrated the vitality and brilliance of Ghana’s alternative music landscape. Through the thoughtful selection of both well-known and up-and-coming musicians, the event succeeded in creating a playlist-worthy beach experience that will linger in the memories of attendees for years to come.
