Ghanaian rapper M.anifest and Beninese singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo are among some African artists to pay their last respect to immediate late music producer Quincy Jones.
Immediately the news of the passing of the legendary producer broke out on Monday morning, M.anifest and Kidjo took to their social media platforms to mourn him.
Jones died on Sunday night in his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 91.
His death was confirmed in a statement by his publicist, Arnold Robinson, who did not specify the cause.
Mr. Jones began his career as a jazz trumpeter and was later in great demand as an arranger, writing for the big bands of Count Basie and others; as a composer of film music; and as a record producer. But he may have made his most lasting mark by doing what some believe to be equally important in the ground-level history of an art form: the work of connecting.
Reacting in a statement, the Ghanaian rapper tagged the late producer an absolute giant and a creative titan, whose musical lineage and tree is incomparable.
“An absolute giant. A creative titan. His musical tree and lineage is incomparable. Thank you for having such a pivotal hand in the music of my childhood.. and prolly that of my parents as well. Quincy Jones… you did that”, he wrote in an X post.
The Beninese singer also shared a lovely photo of herself and Jones and captioned it “RIP @QuincyDJones Your friendship and your constant support changed my life! You were one of the first musicians to show the beauty of true African music to the world! Such a beautiful, funny and inspiring soul. I’m sending much love your way.”
