Former President of the United States Barack Obama’s long-standing tradition of sharing his favourite music twice a year continues as he has just unveiled his summer playlist.
On Monday the 12th of August 2024, Obama took to his official social media platforms to share his summer playlist and some African songs were featured on the list.
Nigerian singers Rema and Tems and fast-rising South African songstress Tyla are the African artists who were featured in the playlist. Rema’s ‘Yayo’ from his sophomore ‘HEIS’ album, Tems’ ‘Love Me Jeje’ and ‘Jump’ by Tyla featuring American rapper Gunna and Jamaican star Skillibeng are among the former President’s favourite songs of the summer.
Other musicians whose records made it to Barack Obama’s playlist include MVA New Artist nominee Shaboozey, H.E.R, the late Tupac, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Saweetie, Tommy Richman, Artemas, PJ Morton, Hope Tala, Jill Scott, Lucinda Williams, etc.
Unveiling the list, he wrote “With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something
new to listen to!”
African musicians getting featured in the playlist of the former President testify to their rapidly growing global influence and audience appeal. It also is a testament to the evolution and creative growth of songs from the continent.
