Thandiswa Mazwai Writes Final Note To Late Mother In ‘Kulungile’ Off New Album

Award-winning South African musician and composer Thandiswa Mazwai has described her birth as one tainted with struggles and revolutions as a time of youth uprisings.

According to her, she is a “wild” woman with heroic traits like the South African activist Winnie Mandela.

Speaking in a chit-chat with Spotify, Thandiswa disclosed that she decided to be a conscious artist who symbolized the black race when she was asked about the kind of act she would become in her early career days.

She also described herself as a “fearless artist”.

Discussing the making of her 2024 album ‘Sankofa’, the ‘Sabela’ hitmaker revealed that she recorded it in Johannesburg, Dakar, Senegal, and New York.

” I recorded ‘Sankofa’ in Johannesburg, Dakar, Senegal and New York,” said the singer.

” And through this journey, I discovered a common Sonic language that rests in the Archive, the modern and futuristic. One of my favourite quotes about love is There is no revolution without love” She added.

The musician also noted that ‘Kulungile’ off the album is her final note to her late mother whose death was “one big trauma I couldn’t let go in a long time “
