At Tidal Rave 2024, Black Sherif made a bold statement during his performance at the 2024 edition of Tidal Rave. The Ghanaian pop star stunned the audience with a poignant video cameo calling for an end to illegal small-scale mining, known locally as “galamsey.” The move, part of his ongoing advocacy, resonated strongly with festivalgoers as it reflected a growing national outcry against the destructive practice.
In a touching moment, Black Sherif brought a young girl on stage who showcased her vocal talent by performing the beloved patriotic anthem “Yɛn Ara Asaase Ni,” originally composed by the legendary Ephraim Amu. Her stirring rendition set the tone for a night of artistry and purpose, as Black Sherif transitioned smoothly into his hit song “Wasteman,” delivering a performance that radiated both passion and unmatched stagecraft.
His set was a masterclass in musicality and stage presence, earning him the title of the night’s standout act. Fans and critics alike commended Black Sherif not only for his artistry but for his courage in addressing pressing national issues. Many Ghanaians praised him for walking the talk, using his platform to amplify the voices of those impacted by galamsey and other societal challenges.
Midway through his set, Black Sherif brought on fellow artist Arathejay for a live rendition of their viral hit “Jesus Christ,” a collaboration that had the crowd on their feet. The duo’s chemistry was electric, solidifying Black Sherif’s dominance as the night’s top performer.
His performance comes amid heightened tensions in Ghana following recent protests against galamsey and broader economic mismanagement. Last month, more than 50 protesters from the Democracy Hub were arrested and detained after demonstrating against illegal mining and government policies. The protesters faced harsh conditions, including being denied bail and access to legal representation for two weeks.
Following public outrage, all protesters were eventually released on bail. As one of Ghana’s most anticipated annual events, Tidal Rave, organized by Echo House Ghana, has grown into a cultural phenomenon that merges music, art, and youth expression.
This year, Black Sherif’s performance reminded attendees of the power of music to not only entertain but also inspire change, cementing Tidal Rave’s status as a festival that reflects the pulse of the nation.
