Twin Power, Big Ambitions: BhadMayors on ‘The Good, The Bhad, The Terrible’

By

It was a different kind of feeling when BhadMayors dropped “Free My Mind” initially with AlorG – more like bliss struck. The track’s appeal resonated with listeners not only from what they heard but what it made them feel, a wave of freedom. The track subsequently got the NSG remix which established the twins as one of the new and freshest voices in Ghana’s music space.

The identical twins, Paul and Samuel Debrah Afful, popularly known as the BhadMayors did not move to the shadows. They have gone on to show commitment to their talent putting in the work with; recording and producing. The outcome was with “Move,” and “Lifestyle” two lead singles of their debut project – with the latter featuring longtime collaborator, AlorG and Kojo Blakk before serving up their full course: “The Good, The Bhad, The Terrible.” The timing couldn’t be sweeter, with tastemakers already crowning them as ones to watch this year.

With their debut project “The Good, The Bhad, The Terrible,” the twin duo offers a deeper look into their journey. One shaped by wins, setbacks, and everything in between. The brothers evidently are establishing their sound while embracing both the weight of expectations and the excitement of new possibilities.

In this conversation with Revolve Muzic, the twins reflect on their creative synergy, the impact of their early success, their ongoing collaborations and the stories behind their first full-length project.

RV: How would you describe the growth of BhadMayors from your early stages to where you are now?

BM: BhadMayors evolved from small beginnings to a big name. We believe we are maturing in sounds and development. We have learned a lot from experiences.

RV: What is the creative dynamic like between you two as twin brothers? Does it give you an advantage in music-making?

BM: The creative dynamic between us as twins is very special. It’s also an advantage because we understand each other really well. We communicate openly and share some life experiences to bring out the perfect sound we envision.

RV: Free My Mind was that spark for you guys. Did anyone expect it to resonate as much as it did?

BM: It’s fair to say “Free My Mind” surprised everybody but also the authenticity really connected with people. We were elated at the level people resonated with the track and us as an artist.

RV: The NSG-assisted remix gave the track even more momentum. To be the new boys on the block, how did that collaboration come about?

BM: The remix with NSG was borne out of mutual respect and talent recognition. They noticed our vibe and we made something magical.

RV: Following the success of “Free My Mind,” what were some of the biggest challenges or pressures you faced of the popularity of the music?

BM: After “Free My Mind”, the effect of a hit record was the pressure that came with it. The pressure and  expectations to replicate that success. But for us the ideal challenge was staying original and that is how we have been able to keep creating and producing.

RV: You’ve worked closely with AlorG on multiple records, including your latest single “Lifestyle” with a few labeling you guys as a group. How would you describe the chemistry and relationship between you guys?

BM: Our relationship with AlorG is literally like that of brothers. We have been together since it all and we have been sharing ideas, pushing each other and staying connected no matter what. So essentially we are brothers.

RV: Given how often you collaborate, do you ever see yourselves forming an official group with AlorG, or do each of you prefer to maintain separate artistic identities?

BM: It’s right if people feel we are a group since we have collaborated often. I mean it makes sense to form an official group but then the best thing for us is balance. That is very important. We need to maintain balance and our identity.

RV: You’ve finally released your debut project, titled “THE GOOD, THE BHAD, THE TERRIBLE“. What inspired the title?

BM: The title “THE GOOD, THE BHAD, THE TERRIBLE” represents different sides of our life and our music journey. It also contributes to our growth and since our first release we have developed a better understanding of what we have committed to doing; that’s music. Music is our life.

RV: How would you describe the theme and sound of the project?

BM: The theme and sound explores various emotions . It also blends different genres to reflect our experiences. “The Good, The Bhad, The Terrible” mainly talks about our life journey through music and basic life experiences. There were times where things got good ,times where things got bad and then really terrible. Hence “The Good” represents those moments and influences that uplift us, instilling hope and joy. “The Bhad” represents the missteps, misunderstandings and the shadows that creep into our lives, reminding us of our vulnerabilities and the lessons we must learn. “The Terrible” represents the marks and pains that cannot be erased from the heart and mind. Nonetheless these moments tested our strength and drove us to our strength.

RV: What were the exciting and challenging parts of this project?

BM: The exciting part of the project is the varying feedback from listeners. Because people consume music differently and we appreciate that. The challenge for us has to do with managing the timing and expectations of the project. You know, like when people ask “What’s next?”

RV: What can fans expect to accompany the release of the project? Will there be a solo show or any plans for touring around with the project?

BM: For the project release, fans can expect some brilliant visuals. We are planning to have a solo show as well so let’s see how it goes. There are also plans for touring to connect with our fans with live concerts. Whether within the country or extend outside the shores of the country we will see about that.

RV: What do you hope listeners take away from THE GOOD, THE BHAD, THE TERRIBLE?

BM: We hope our listeners will take away the message of resilience and growth the project portrays.
