R&B singer and songwriter Tyla has become the first African artist to win three MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) in one night.
This comes after the ‘Water’ hitmaker won Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act at the 2024 edition of the decorated ceremony. She beats Nigerian superstars Asake, Ayra Starr, Rema, Burna Boy and Tems to be crowned the Best Afrobeats Act.
Tyla followed Award-winning American singer Taylor Swift who was the biggest winner for the night with four awards. In a few years since her breakthrough song ‘Water’, the South African talent has already won a Grammy, BET Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, etc, solidifying her high position in the music industry.
This year’s ceremony held at Manchester on the 10th of November featured stellar performances from top musicians such as Tyla, Benson Boone, K-pop group LE SSERAFIM, The Warning Band, RAYE, SIA, Peso Pluma, etc. Legendary rapper Busta Rhymes was honored with the Global Icon Award.
The ceremony paid tribute to late singer and songwriter Liam Payne. The former One Direction band member passed after falling from his hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina this year.
