Grammy award-winning singer, Tyla has officially released her self-titled debut studio album through Epic Records and FAX.
The fourteen-track album features her breakthrough single, “Water,” which just had a music video released for its Travis Scott remix. It also features other collaborations with fellow South African DJ/producer Kelvin Momo (“Intro”), Tems (“No. 1”), Gunna and Skillibeng (“Jump”), and Becky G (“On My Body”). Along with her 2022 single “To Last,” Tyla also includes previously released songs “Truth or Dare,” “On and On,” and “Butterflies” that were combined into a Tyla EP toward the end of 2023. She also gave Lisa of BLACKPINK the “first listen” to the song “A.R.T.”, which is the tenth.
In a recent interview with streaming platform Apple Music, the pop star said, “The roots of my sound are in amapiano music, in South African and African music.”
Despite Tyla’s announcement that she would postpone her global tour and Coachella appearance due to an intolerable injury, the build-up to her most recent release has been thrilling, particularly for her Tygers.
In an interview with OkayAfrica.com Tyla says she is just looking forward to growing her audience and letting more people listen and pay attention to her music.
With her new album, which has an international flavour and speaks to the diaspora, Tyla expresses a celebration of South African culture. Tyla needed to travel to polish her sound, so she began doing so three years ago as she recorded her debut in a number of locations, including Dubai, London, Los Angeles, South Africa, Ghana, and Nigeria.
