South African singer and songwriter Tyla remains a force to reckon with in Afrobeats, balancing chart-topping hits, viral moments, and unmatched cultural influence. Even without a sophomore studio album, she has kept the spotlight with only her breakthrough hit ‘Water’.
Billboard has released its Year-end charts and Tyla is the Top Afrobeats Songs Artist of 2024, surpassing Grammy-Award winning musician Tems, Mavin Records act Rema, Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, Cameroonian singer Libianca, Ghanaian R&B superstar Amaarae, Seyi Vibez and Omah Lay.
Tyla has been dominating the Billboard Afrobeats Charts since February this. After ‘Water’ occupied the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart in earlier this year, it returned to #1 on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs for a 52nd week at the top and 65 weeks on the chart in Nov 26— It extended its record as both the longest running solo and female-led #1 song in the chart’s history.
The South African superstar’s historic milestone is a testament to her fast-rising popularity and audience appeal in the Afrobeats space. It is a testament that her reign with the Nigerian-pioneered genre is far from over.
While Taylor Swift is Billboard’s Year-end Top Artist of 2024, Chappell Roan is the year-end Top New Artist. Billboard’s year-end music recaps represent aggregated metrics for each artist, title, label and music contributor on the weekly charts from Oct. 28, 2023, through Oct. 19, 2024.
Rankings for Luminate-based recaps reflect equivalent album units, airplay, sales or streaming during the weeks that the titles appeared on a respective chart during the tracking year. Any activity registered before or after a title’s chart run isn’t considered in these rankings.
That methodology detail, and the October-October time period, account for some of the differences between these lists and the calendar-year recaps that are independently compiled by Luminate. The Top Artists and Top New Artists categories rank the best-performing acts, and new acts, of the year based on activity on the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot 100, as well as Billboard Boxscore (touring), for the 2024 tracking period.
