Vince Staples Announces Eighth Studio Album ‘Dark Times’

By

Vince Staples has announced that  “Dark Times,” his eighth studio album, will be available on Blacksmith Records / Def Jam Recordings on May 24. This album, which has his trademark deep lyricism over opulent, layered beats and offers sarcastic, sad reflections about life and finding light in the dark, ushering in a new era for the prolific musician.

“Dark Times” was recorded over the course of seven months in North Hollywood. After Staples listened to the album through to the end and noticed recurring heavy motifs, the album title occurred to him naturally. The record cover, which depicted a barely visible noose, was equally symbolic of the project’s overarching themes of hardship and tenacity.

Following the album announcement, Staples released the first single, “Shame on the Devil,” accompanied by a stirring music video. Despite loneliness and falling out with pals, Staples reflects on the tainted nature of his life while rapping over a cozy, ghostly beat in the song.

Staples referred to the endeavor as “a personal achievement,” saying that it involved him learning how to do some things that he had attempted in the past but wasn’t very good at. It’s evidence of song structure and musical development, all the wonderful stuff. Expect a gorgeously produced, profoundly reflective album that keeps pushing the boundaries of his talent.

“Dark Times” is expected to be powerful and groundbreaking, enhancing aspects that have been in Staples’ catalog for the previous ten years. Make sure to reserve May 24 on your calendars so you may see “Dark Times” in its entirety and listen to the first track, “Shame on the Devil,” which is already streaming.
