American singer and songwriter Chappell Roan, on Wednesday the 11th of September 2024, won her debut MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and dedicated the historic milestone to the LGBTQ+ community she has been advocating for.
Chappell, before the main ceremony, gave an electric performance of her chart-topping and playlist-dominating record ‘Good luck, Babe!”. After the show-stopping display, she was crowned the Best New Artist.
Chappell cheered up after accepting her Moon Person from Tinashe, covering her face with disbelief as fans at New York’s UBS Arena applauded her, she screamed “Can you believe it, we are at the VMAs”
“I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me, and I dedicate this to queer and trans people who fuel pop,” she continued, reading from a small journal she took with her on stage. “To the gays, who dedicate my songs to someone they love or hate … for all the queer kids in the midwest watching right now, I see you. I understand you, because I am one of you.” She said.
” Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be, b—h,” Roan said with a smirk, leaving the crowd with her last message after thanking her record label, Island Records.
This year’s VMAs which came off at UBS Arena outside of New York marked 40 years since the inception of the global music awards ceremony. Taylor Swift was the most awarded artist for the night with seven wins followed by her ‘Fortnight’ collaborator Post Malone with 5 awards.
