Vybz Kartel Makes Bold Statement with First Show Since Release from Jail

By

Jamaican dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel has made a bold statement with his just ended ‘Freedom Street’ Concert, testifying to his longstanding legacy and stardom.

Held on the 31st of December 2024, the show featured stellar and energetic performances from dancehall megastars including Popcaan, Spice, Shatta Wale, Skeng, Skillibeng, Sheba, American rapper Busta Rhymes and more.

The concert held at the 35,000-person capacity National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, was Kartel’s first performance in13 years and since his release from jail in July last year after serving a decade jail term for murder.

In an interview with  New York Times, the artist remarked on the changes he expected to see in his audience, stating: “The importance of this concert is a whole generation of people have never seen Vybz Kartel perform.”

Kartel was convicted in the 2011 death of Clive Williams in a trial that was one of the longest in Jamaican history. His sentence was overturned last summer following of allegations of jury misconduct with the Jamaican Court of Appeals electing not to retry the case.
