Yemi Alade Discusses Her ‘African’ Music Style And Brand

A Mixture Of Highlife, Afrobeats, Afropop and more

Nigerian Afrobeats songstress and songwriter Yemi Alade has opened up on her Indigenous music style, craft and brand.

According to her, being an artist who doesn’t want to be limited in the industry, she explores different kinds of music styles and genres.

Speaking in an interview with France 24’s Fatimata Wane at the 16th edition of the highly-profiled and decorated Femua Festival in Abidjan, the Grammy-award-winning act described her genre as “Afro mashup’.

She explained that her sound is a mixture of Ghana’s Highlife, Nigerian Afrobeats, dancehall, Afropop and R&B.

Discussing how she manages to make waves and headlines in a male-dominated industry, the ‘Johnny’ hitmaker said “I don’t see it as something new because I believe I just have to do my best. I think there is more in me for the world to see and hear”

She continued that she doesn’t compete with anyone in the industry because she sees both her male and female colleagues as her inspirations.
